Travel Guide to the Smaller Nature Reserves of the Southern Drakensberg Area

The Smaller Nature Reserves of the Southern Drakensberg

The smaller Nature Reserves that are managed by the KZN Willife are:

Coleford Nature Reserve is a small reserve well situated for the visitor wishing to explore the region. The reserve is a popular rendezvous for trout fishermen and the Ingwangwane and Ndawana rivers provide excellent sport during the trout season. There are four dams which are regularly stocked with rainbow trout. There are delightful walks in the area, and a pleasant picnic site is situated at the river opposite Sunnyside.

Himeville Nature Reserve is an attractive peri-urban "postage stamp" of a reserve on the outskirts of Himeville of which most of the area is taken up by its two dams and camping site! You can trout fish or birdwatch or easily meander the Sani Saunter from here!

Impendle Nature Reserve is not well known, yet, it is home to the highly endangered Blue Swallow and Cape Parrot. The reserve protects Mistbelt Grassland and Misbelt Forest, both of which are globally unique ecozones. The reserve is thus crtical to the future of the Blue Swallow, of which only 81 definite breeding pairs are left in South Africa (this reserve is home to 5 breeding pairs) and the Cape Parrot of which there are approximately 500 birds remaining! Only camping is allowed.

The Swamp Nature Reserve protects a vast highland swamp system. This reserve has no facilities.
