Facts about the Roan Antelope -- Hippotragus equinus:

SIZE: Shoulder height (m) 1,4 m, (f) 1,3 m; mass (m) 280 kg, (f) 250 kg. Both sexes have characteristic, backward-sweeping horns.

COLOUR: Coat reddish-grey, with lighter undersides; the face has a distinctive black and white 'mask'.

GESTATION PERIOD: 9 months

POTENTIAL LONGEVITY: 18 -19 years

RECORD LENGTH OF HORNS: 99 cm

LENGTH OF EARS: approx. 26 cm

MOST LIKE: The Sable Antelope which, however, is slightly smaller, and black (male) or reddish-brown (female) above, unlike the Roan Antelope's rufous-grey colouring. The Roan Antelope's horns are shorter and less curved than the sable's.

HABITAT: Medium to tall grassland, close to trees and water.
