SIZE: Shoulder height (m) 1,3 m, (f) 1,2 m; mass (m) 250 kg, (f) 200 kg.

COLOUR: Grey to greyish-brown, coarse, shaggy coat; white ring on rump; white markings around eyes, chin and nose. Legs and abdomen darker; long, dark tuft on tail. Bulls, especially, have a white fringe at the throat.

GESTATION PERIOD: 8 months

POTENTIAL LONGEVITY: 10 - 12 years

RECORD LENGTH OF HORNS: 99 cm

MOST LIKE: Reedbuck, but larger. Horns similar but twice as long. White 'target' ring on rump characteristic, as is coarse and shaggy coat.

HABITAT: Open plains or woodland close to water.
